About Villa de Leyva

Villa de Leyva is a city located in the Boyacá Department. It was founded as Villa de Santa María de Leyva in 1572, and it is known for the preservation of its historical heritage from the colonial era, as well for the archeological remains that date to the prehistoric times.Specialists have concluded that the area was originally a primordial sea in the Cretacic era which was inhabited by several species of dinosaurs. Several museums and institutions research and exhibit the archeological remains that... have been found so far.During the colonial times the city became an important town that was renowned for its wheat production. The town began to be abandoned by the end of the XVIIIth century, but halfway through the XXth president Gustavo Rojas Pinillas declared the city as an historical monument and pushed forward several policies for the recovery of its historical heritage.
