Girardot is a city in the department of Cundinamarca in Colombia. It has a tropical climate, which, alongside being only three hours away from Bogotá, makes it a preferred spot for recreational activities and sports for the bogoteans and other visitors.The city was founded near 1840, in the territory called “La Chivatera”, known for its goat breeding. Afterwards, the city changed its name in honor to Atanasio Girardot, a hero of the Independence Campaign. During the Thousand Day War in 1886 the ...city began accepting refugees who settled in the vicinity. Once the war was over, the city made the most out of its location, first as an important port in the Magdalena River, and then as an important waypoint in the railroads, which allowed it to expand a grow as an important economic center for the region.
