About Pasto
Oficialmente llamada San Juan de Pasto, es una ciudad ubicada en el valle Atriz en la cordillera de los Andes, en la falda del Volcán Galeras. Fue fundada en 1539 por el conquistador Lorenzo de Aldana, en un territorio otrora ocupado por la cultura Quillacinga. Pasto posee una interesante historia política. La ciudad fue un foco de resistencia realista durante las guerra de Independencia, por lo que se le llamó “La Leona de los Andes”, y fue saqueada en 1822 por el bando independentista. Debido a su posición geográfica y su postura política, la ciudad se mantuvo aislada del resto de Colombia por un buen tiempo. Producto de las guerras civiles al inicio de la era republicana, Pasto fue brevemente la capital del país, por decisión de Leonardo Canal Gonzáles, un general conservador. En 1904, con la creación del departamento de Nariño, Pasto fue nombrada su capital, y hoy es una importante ciudad dedicada principalmente al comercio y a la producción de servicios.

● Historic Center: Group of colonial buildings in a perfect state. The main attraction is the Cathedral of San Ezequiel Moreno Díaz, gothic style building constructed on top of the San Francisco de Asís Chapel, which was sacked in 1822.
